Do Black Lives Still Matter? (2021)

When George Floyd was killed, many said life would get better for people of colour. But has it? One year on, grime star Saskilla looks for answers.
Episode 1 – BRANDS
Following the death of George Floyd and the surge in the Black Lives Matter movement, big brands made pledges to address racial inequalities across their businesses. Saskilla speaks to black influencers who describe a huge rise in interest during the summer. But would it last? He speaks to former and current employees at well-known brands who express concerns over a lack of diversity. And we hear from consumers who tried to hold brands to account by challenging them on social media.
Episode 2 – FOOTBALL
In the summer of 2020, footballers across the nation took the knee and the Football Association made a pledge on diversity and inclusion. But will these actions make a difference? Saskilla speaks to Premier League footballers, coaches and managers across the UK. While representation on the pitch in the men’s game is high, the women’s game appears to have got worse in recent years. Plus he discovers some fascinating research that suggests skin tone could be factor when it comes to which players are chosen for leadership positions, potentially leading to a lost generation of talent.
Episode 3 – MUSIC
The music industry reacted with a surge of outrage to the death of George Floyd. Artists and labels posted black squares on social media, standing in solidarity with people of colour. But what have music powerhouses done in the year that has followed? The major labels pledged huge sums of money, but is it being spent in the right way? While there are many artists of colour producing music, for those working behind the scenes it’s a different story. We reveal shocking data that shows how people of colour and women of colour in particular are dropping out of the industry. And we explore the idea of what ‘black music’ really means. Why is it so much harder for black artists to do rock than white artists to do rap?
