The Factory (2011)

Cooper & Stollbrand is one of Manchester’s last remaining clothing factories. In a decaying Dickensian mill, a motley crew of OAP’s and migrants create the latest cutting edge fashion.

Eighteen months ago, part-owner, James Eden left his lucrative job at RBS to buy a stake in Cooper and Stollbrand, a loss-making clothing factory. Since taking over, James has dragged the factory out of the doldrums and they are now producing garments for the likes of Topshop and premium designer labels.

But the designer garments are complicated to make; the company produces over 50 styles for their premium clients and each design has its own personality which the machinist must capture. But despite 900 years sewing experience, the machinists are finding work on the new designs difficult.

‘Made in England’ follows the factory as it fights to deliver the Christmas orders on time.
