The brutal killing of his mum when he was a year old, changed Daniel’s life forever, 30 years later, her murder remains unsolved and Tina is all but forgotten. Now Daniel is determined to find out the truth about the tragedy that shaped his past. Who murdered his mum?
Tina was a beautiful and happy young mother from North London. Enveloped in a warm and loving family, she grew up seeing the best in everyone – but tragically experienced the worst. An horrific attack when she was a teenager set off a series of events that saw her sectioned in a psychiatric hospital – and culminated in her untimely death.
She left behind Daniel, a joyous and kind young man who is now the same age as Tina was when she was killed. Although the first to tell you that he had a happy upbringing with his Nan and aunt, Daniel knows he is missing a piece of his story.
Desperate to understand why his mum has been forgotten, Daniel begins piecing together her past with the help of his aunt, Lesley. Unsure about re-opening old wounds, Lesley confronts her own anger over how badly Tina has been let down by a system stacked against female victims of crime.
As Daniel finds out more about the vibrant and happy woman Tina was, the repercussions of her death on the family become clearer. And as he gets to know Tina better, he grieves her properly for the first time.
His thoughts turn to his father – a man entirely absent from his life. Daniel learns more about his parents’ tumultuous relationship. His father stood in the dock, accused of her murder, but the trial ended in his acquittal. So who did kill Tina?
No-one has ever been brought to justice for Tina’s murder; Daniel delves into the court case to understand why – and his journey takes a hopeful turn as the police agree to take another look at the case. But after so much time can Tina ever get the justice she deserves?
Investigating his own mum’s murder, Daniel meets legal experts and victims’ advocates, to explore what his mum’s tragic story can reveal about an epidemic of violence against women.
